Frames at the Frick
Today picture frames are often viewed as simple accessories to paintings. In the past however, highly carved and gilded frames were an essential part of an interior and considerable time and expense went into their design. Conservator Joseph Godla will introduce frames in the Collection and discuss the fabrication, regional variations, and factors that influenced their presentation in The Frick Collection.
Two Wednesdays: March 11, 18
2:30–4:00 p.m. $200, $180 members |

James Abbott McNeill Whistler in The Frick Collection
Along with Gilbert Stuart, Whistler is one of only two American artists represented in The Frick Collection, and Henry Clay Frick acquired more of his works — five paintings, twelve etchings, and three pastels — than of any other artist. This two-part seminar led by Senior Curator Susan Grace Galassi will focus on his paintings and prints and the influences of Old Masters, such as Gainsborough, Reynolds, Velázquez, and Goya.
Two Thursdays: March 26, April 2

The Progress of Love: Fragonard in The Frick Collection
Acclaimed as one of the most beautiful ensembles of paintings by any artist, and Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s undisputed masterpiece, The Progress of Love has a fascinating history. Commissioned in 1771 to decorate a salon in Madame du Barry’s pavilion at Louveciennes, the paintings remained there only for a year or so, after which time du Barry rejected them. Chief Curator Colin B. Bailey will discuss the commission, original placement of the works, and how the narrative progress weaves the various pictures together.
Monday: May 4
2:00–3:30 p.m. $100, $90 members |
