Assistant Photoarchivist
Background
The Frick Art Reference Library, one of the world's leading centers for research in the history of art, was founded in 1920 by Miss Helen Clay Frick (1888-1984) to further the goals of "encouraging and developing the study of the fine arts and of advancing the general knowledge of 'kindred subjects'." The Library became a division of The Frick Collection in 1987. The Frick Collection is an art museum consisting of more than 1,100 works of art from the thirteenth to the nineteenth century, displayed in the intimate surroundings of the former home of Henry Clay Frick. The residence, with its furnishings and works of art, has been open to the public since 1935. It is one of the world's most perfect museums.
Summary and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Photoarchive Research the Assistant Photoarchivist undertakes to research and record scholarly documentation of the works of art represented in the Photoarchive, update and expand the Photoarchive database, facilitate public access to the Photoarchive, and assist the department in all special projects. Specific duties include but are not limited to: updating and expanding documentation accompanying images in the Photoarchive; creation of database cataloguing records; preparing supplemental photograph mounts; updating and expanding in-house authority files; ensuring standardization of vocabulary in databases and item records; checking recent acquisitions against current holdings; assisting in the preparation of photograph orders to fill existing gaps in the collection; assisting Public Services Department with Reference Desk duty.
Qualifications
Masters degree in the history of Western art. Knowledge of and ability to use online databases and art research reference sites, thorough grounding in basic reference materials and scholarship in area of specialization. Reading knowledge of at least one European language. Some familiarity with computer applications including Photoshop, Filemaker or equivalent. Concern for accuracy and patience with detail; good organizational skills; expeditious approach to a work agenda; excellent verbal and written communication skills.
