David H. Solkin discusses JMW Turner's work and love of art. David H. Solkin is Walter H. Annenberg Professor of the History of Art and Dean and Deputy Director at The Courtauld Institute of Art, London. A leading authority on eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century British painting, he was awarded the William MB Berger Prize for the exhibition and catalogue Art on The Line: The Royal Academy Exhibitions at Somerset House 1780-1836 (The Courtauld Gallery, London, 2001-2) and in 2004-5 delivered the Paul Mellon Lectures at The National Gallery, London, and at Yale University (subsequently expanded and published as Painting Out of the Ordinary: Modernity and the Art of Everyday Life in Early Nineteenth-Century Britain [Yale University Press, 2008]). Professor Solkin recently organized the groundbreaking exhibition Turner and the Masters at Tate Britain, London, the Grand Palais, Paris, and the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid (2009-10).
