Auction Catalogs
The Library is one of the largest repositories of auction catalogs and provenance information in North America. Its collection
consists of more than 80,000 catalogs, with an annual acquisitions
rate of 1,500. Catalogs from more than 1,000 auction houses in Europe,
Australia, and the Americas, ranging in date from the early seventeenth
century to the present, are represented in the collection. Currently,
the Library maintains more than 100 auction house subscriptions,
of which most are donated in recognition of the Library's service
to the international art community. Annotated catalogs and price
lists, when available, have been acquired to provide additional
sales information. The Library continues to acquire unique and rare
catalogs of early sales, and supplements the collection with Art
Sales Catalogues Online and the Getty Provenance Index. The Library
participates in SCIPIO, a union list of auction catalogs and their
locations in North America and Europe.
