Upon arrival in the Americas in 1492, the Spanish sought to understand the things they encountered by relating them to familiar narratives. In one such instance, sixteenth-century scholars strove to place indigenous American peoples within the framework of biblical history, arguing that they were descended from the Lost Tribes of Israel.
