Collecting the "Uncollectible": Earth and Site-Specific Sculpture

Lectures from The Center for the History of Collecting one-day symposium, Collecting the Uncollectible: Earth and Site-Specific Sculpture, given on May 23, 2019.

Presented by the Center for the History of Collecting, Frick Art Reference Library

This half-day symposium focused on collecting the uncollectible, works of art by artists such as Walter de Maria, Michael Heizer, Nancy Holt, Richard Serra, Robert Smithson, Michelle Stuart, James Turrell, and others. Scholars, curators, collectors, an artist, and a conservator explored the many obstacles related to large scale, light-based, earth and site-specific sculptures—their installation, maintenance, preservation, and ultimate stewardship. Suzaan Boettger, Jarl Mohn, Jessica Morgan, Leonard Riggio, and Michelle Stuart were among the participants. Sponsorship from the Robert H. Smith Family Foundation and Northern Trust made this event possible.
