Edgar Munhall (1933–2016)

Edgar Munhall was Curator Emeritus of The Frick Collection. After teaching art history at Yale University, Dr. Munhall joined The Frick Collection in 1965 as its first Curator, a post he held until his retirement in 2000. In recognition of his services in promulgating French art, he was named an Officier in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2002.

His publications include Catalogue des Dessins du Musėe Jenisch Vevey (co-author, 2012); “Greuze's Portrait of the Duchesse de Choiseul" in Waddesdon Miscellanea (2009); Oklahoma City Museum of Art: Selected Paintings and Sculpture from the Collection (co-author, 2007); A Pair of Portraits by Jean-Baptiste Greuze (2006); The Frick Collection: An Illustrated Catalogue. Volume 9: Drawings, Prints, and Later Acquisitions (co-author, 2003); Greuze the Draftstman (2002); Art in the Frick Collection: Paintings, Sculpture, Decorative Arts (co-author, 1996); Whistler and Montesquiou: The Butterfly and the Bat (1995, English and French editions); Little Notes Concerning Watteau's "Portal of Valenciennes" (1992); and Ingres and the Comtesse d'Haussonville (1985, reissued 1998).

Donations in memory of Edgar Munhall may be sent to the Edgar Munhall Book Fund at the Frick Art Reference Library.
