Xavier F. Salomon: “Murillo’s Self-Portraits”

To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the birth of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, The Frick Collection has reunited for the first time the only two known self-portraits by the artist. This lecture provides an introduction to the special exhibition, focusing on these two rare paintings and their context.

Xavier F. Salomon: “Paolo Veronese and Francesco degli Arbori’s Chapel in Murano”

Between 1566 and 1567, the priest Francesco degli Arbori oversaw the construction of a small private chapel on the island of Murano, in the Venetian Lagoon. To decorate it, he commissioned Paolo Veronese, one of the most sought-after artists in Venice. The two principal works from the building, recently restored, are the focus of the special exhibition and this lecture.

Guido Cagnacci, whose Repentant Magdalene is the focus of the special exhibition, was one of the most eccentric painters of seventeenth-century Italy. This lecture tracks his turbulent life and career by following his footsteps from his native Romagna to Venice and finally to Vienna. While researching the exhibition, curator Xavier F. Salomon visited the cities where the painter lived and worked, and his talk provides a window into the artist’s fascinating world.

The Frick Collection’s masterpiece by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, generously given by Dr. and Mrs. Henry Clay Frick II in 2014, is one of only two known self-portraits by the Spanish artist. Salomon explores the fascinating history of the painting, relating it to Murillo’s other portraits and to his career.
