In 1786 Johann Christian Neuber advertised in the Journal
des Luxus und der Moden (Journal of Luxury and Fashion) of Leipzig: "M. Neuber, jeweler to the court of the Elector
of Dresden, has invented a very nice way to make buttons
that is likely to be imitated in Paris. As incredible as it
seems, in fashion, Germany could offer a model for this
great capital." With such an advertisement, Neuber hoped
to attract a large number of customers for his unique buttons
and other luxurious accessories, including chatelaines
worn by women on their belts to hold a watch, keys, or
sewing tools.
